Cowie and success seem to go hand in hand. In seven years as a
collegiate head coach, Cowie's teams have not had a losing season.
Couple that with an overall winning percentage of .620 and it's easy to
see how Cowie and success fit well together.
One of Cowie's innate abilities throughout his coaching career has been
his knack for immediately raising the standard of excellence everywhere
he has coached, with Davidson being no exception. The combined records
of R.I.T., New York and Davidson the seasons before Cowie arrived were
56-49 (.533). Two of those schools ended those respective years with
losing records. Undaunted, Cowie-led squads notched a combined 71-37
(.657) mark in his first season of work at the three schools.
In 2001, a year before Cowie arrived at Davidson, the Wildcats were a
mere 15-17 overall and finished sixth in the Southern Conference.
However, in 2002, Davidson returned to the forefront of SoCon volleyball
by going 23-11 overall and placing third in the conference standings. In
addition, Davidson took eventual SoCon champ College of Charleston to
five games in the semifinals of the league tournament at the end of the
season.
Prior to arriving at Davidson, Cowie spent two years in charge of New
York University's women's volleyball team. In his rookie campaign at NYU
in 2000, Cowie led the Division III Violets to a 22-12 overall record,
including a first-place finish at the Scranton Invitational, a
second-place finish at the SUNY-Oneonta Red Dragon Invitational and a
third-place finish at the University Athletic Association Championships.
For his efforts, Cowie and his assistants were named UAA Co-Coaching
Staff of the Year.
Cowie's second season at NYU saw the Violets finish 17-14 overall,
including wins over NCAA Division II Pace University, as well as UAA
rivals Brandeis, Rochester, Chicago, Case Western and
then-number-one-ranked Washington University. While at New York
University, he recruited student-athletes that included All-Americans,
NCAA All-Regions, an NCAA All-Region Freshman of the Year and UAA
All-Conference players.
Cowie joined NYU after four seasons as head coach of the
nationally-recognized women's volleyball team at the Rochester Institute
of Technology. While at R.I.T., Cowie led the Tigers to a 125-43 overall
record. His teams earned four consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament
bids and advanced into the second round each of the four years. His
first collegiate head-coaching experience came during the 1995-96
season. Cowie served as coach of the men's volleyball club team at the
University of Rochester and led the program to a very successful 14-3
campaign.
A 1988 graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College with a degree in business
administration, Cowie held many positions at his alma mater. He was an
assistant women's volleyball coach at RWC from 1985-88 and then went on
to become the men's basketball assistant coach (1989-1994). He returned
to women's volleyball during the 1995-96 season.
In addition to his responsibilities at Davidson, Cowie has served on the
NCAA Volleyball Rules Committee. He has also been a voter on the AVCA
(American Volleyball Coaches Association) Coaches Poll and All-America
Committee.
A native of Oshawa, Ontario, Cowie and his wife Gwen have three children
